Yesterday, I took my son Jeremiah to Branched Oak to preview the course for our upcoming race, the Branched Oak Braaap!
Before every race, Jeremiah and I talk about his personal goal. As both a parent and a coach, I want him to focus on progress and growth, not just the podium. For this race, his goal was simple: finish both laps without stopping.
When I asked him how he planned to reach that goal, his answer caught me off guard.
“Water,” he said.
I laughed and asked, “Water? How is water going to help you finish your laps?”
With a grin, he explained: “Water breath. In through my nose, out through my mouth.”
It was a technique he had picked up from Coach Keenan during the Mindfulness and Breathing session at this year’s race clinic. In that moment, I realized just how much these lessons sink in. It wasn’t just about cycling—it was about finding calm, focus, and confidence when the trail gets tough.
This is what makes our league so special. Our kids are learning far more than how to ride. They’re learning resilience, mindfulness, and life skills that will stick with them long after the race is over. Coaches like Keenan leave a lasting impact—sometimes in ways we don’t see until moments like this.
As we head into the final two weeks of our season, we invite you to be part of this journey:
Say thank you. If a coach has made a difference in your life or your child’s life, let them know.
Support the mission. Every donation—big or small—helps us continue creating this environment where kids grow, learn, and thrive on and off the bike.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about racing. It’s about building a community where moments like “water breath” happen—and last a lifetime.
Sincerely,
Bree Campbell, Jeremiah’s mom
